Day 5 (Monday 30 March)

This morning I decided to go to the local supermarket early to avoid the queue. Fortunately I had gone early enough to miss the queue but what a surreal experience! First a masked man offered me some hand sanitiser and directed me to the sanitising wipes so I could wipe the handle of the trolley. While the shelves weren't empty they certainly weren't as full as usual and the layout of the store seemed different to what it used to be. It's only Day 5 of lockdown and already I felt uncomfortable being around people and finished my shopping as quickly as I could. I had to wait in the red circle by the checkout to ensure I was maintaining an appropriate physical distance and a perspex screen separated me from the checkout operator. A very different experience to my weekly Countdown shop just over a week ago!

The other unusual sight today was two nurses consulting with patients in their cars outside the doctor's surgery.

Finally I have succeeded in video chatting with Dad via facebook messenger. I wish I'd tried this earlier as it was so simple and Dad and I got connected straight away. While we were chatting I got a phone call and had to hangup, telling dad I would ring him back. When I tried to ring him back it said he was on another call. When we finally got connected again Dad told me he had somehow ended up video calling his sister in law in Hamilton.😁 Dad asked me if he could call other people as well, and when I explained that he could call all the people on his messenger list he was so happy. In his words "You've made my day."

Geoff has started the bathroom renovations today. We are lucky we have another toilet and the renovations don't impact on the shower.

One thing I am really struggling with is not being able to recycle. At the moment we can only recycle glass and I'm not sure how long that will last for. It feels so wrong to put plastics, paper etc into the rubbish bin.  I guess at the moment the focus is on saving the human race rather than saving the planet!

Went for a walk today  ( I'm really hoping we don't get to absolute lockdown where exercise is forbidden) ...saw some lovely pavement chalk art in George St, encouraging me to do hopscotch and telling me it is a nice day for a walk.

Today's update on total Covid19 cases is 589... fortunately no more deaths. The number of cases has more than doubled in only 5 days. Scary stuff.

What I am thankful for today: Seeing the look on Dad's face when he realised how easy making a facebook messenger video call is and how he can connect with so many people this way.

Day 2 (Friday 27 March)

My first thought today was wondering how long it will be before we stop referring to the days as Monday, Tuesday etc, but as Day 13, Day 14 etc. It's not easy to know what day it is when there's no differentiation between the week and weekdays. I went for my morning walk today as usual. While I was walking along George Street a little girl called out hello from an upstairs window and a lady who was chatting to her neighbor from her balcony also waved and called out Good Morning. While Geoff and I were sitting on the front porch having lunch a mother and her little daughter walked past, stopped and waved to us, then the Mum said, "Oh look they have a teddy in the window."  Makes me realise that in our very busy lives we don't connect with people in this way. Day 14 (Wednesday 8 April)

This might be the shortest blog entry yet. I went for my usual morning walk, but Geoff had to do a mercy dash to pick me up to prevent a crisis occurring. I won't go into detail here, I will leave that to your imagination. So after a cup of tea I ventured out again, this time to the monastery, one of my favourite local walks. I haven't achieved anything on my non existent to do list, so no pretend crossing off to do. Geoff has been installing the new toilet and my job has been to try to help him identify why there was a leak. I'm pleased to say the problem has been identified (not by me) and we are back to a two toilet household. Our total number of cases is now 1210, only 50 new cases overnight. However I don't think schools will be going back in 2 weeks. The government announced today a $88 million dollar package to support distance learning. I hardly think this amount of money would be spent to support distance learning for only 2 weeks. What I am thankful for ...

Day 32 (Sunday April 26)

Another lovely Autumn day today. We had a busy day in the backyard today, Geoff splitting logs and cutting down a couple of dead trees. My job was to wheelbarrow the logs that have been drying out against the back fence and stack them in the woodshed next to the garage. Unfortunately I wasn't feeling too flash today, some sort of lockdown lurgy that made me feel quite lightheaded, tired and dizzy. I'm proud to say I soldiered on, taking breaks as necessary and got the wood stacked. Nine new cases today, a bit higher than I had hoped but still in single figures. What I am thankful for today: Sunny days which even when I'm feeling a bit under the weather can cheer me up.
